Summer doesn’t have to mean expensive attractions, crowded hotspots or complicated planning. Sometimes the best days out are slower ones - discovering somewhere peaceful, spending time outdoors and finding places that feel welcoming and easy to enjoy.

We’ve put together a summer bucket list of beautiful places around the UK that are known for accessibility features and welcoming spaces. From hidden gardens and lakes to beaches, picnic spots and local markets, there’s something for every kind of summer day.

Botanical Gardens

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

~£25–£27 adult, concessions available. Around 30 minutes from Central London.

One of London’s most peaceful green spaces and easy to spend either a full day or just a relaxed afternoon. There’s plenty of space to move at your own pace and quieter areas away from the main attractions.

Sheffield Botanical Gardens

FREE. 10 minutes from Sheffield, 1 hour from Manchester.

Smaller and quieter than many famous botanical gardens, with open lawns, historic glasshouses and easier-to-navigate paths for a slower day out.

Accessibility notes: Accessible route options, mostly level pathways, accessible facilities nearby, plenty of seating.


Ventnor Botanic Garden

~£12–£15 adult, concessions available. 10 minutes from Ventnor, 40 minutes from Newport (plus ferry crossing).

Known for its sheltered microclimate and unusual planting, Ventnor feels calmer and less busy than many larger gardens.

Accessibility notes: Accessible routes available, accessible parking. Some areas unsuitable but route guidance is available before visiting.


🌊 Lakes & Waterside Walks

Walthamstow Wetlands

FREE. Around 30 minutes from Central London.

A surprisingly peaceful escape inside London with huge open views and plenty of places to stop. Great if you want nature without travelling far.

Rutland Water

FREE. Around 30 minutes from Leicester and around 40 minutes from Peterborough.

One of those places that feels bigger than expected. Accessible walking sections, waterside cafés and quieter viewpoints make it easy to explore at your own pace.

Loch Leven Heritage Trail

FREE. Around 40 minutes from Edinburgh.

Beautiful scenery with flexible route lengths so visitors can choose shorter accessible sections rather than committing to a full trail.

🏖️ Quiet Beaches

Brighton Beach

FREE. 20 minutes from Brighton city centre, 90 minutes from Central London by train.

One of the UK’s better-known accessible beaches, but easy to spread out along the seafront and find quieter areas away from the busiest sections. Great for a relaxed day by the sea.

Boscombe Beach

FREE. 10 minutes from Bournemouth, approximately 2.5 hours from London.

A good option if you need wheelchair access all the way across the sand. Boscombe offers accessible beach matting and beach wheelchair availability during summer.

Benllech Beach

FREE. 35 minutes from Bangor, around 1 hour from Snowdonia.

A quieter North Wales option with easier access than many beaches. Wide sands and nearby facilities make it ideal for slower summer days.

Picnic Spots

Isabella Plantation, Richmond Park

FREE. 30 minutes from Central London.

A peaceful corner of Richmond Park that feels surprisingly removed from the city. Ideal for bringing lunch and spending a few relaxed hours outdoors.

WWT London Wetland Centre

~£17-£18 adult, concessions available. 25 minutes from Central London.

Boardwalk routes, accessible hides and plenty of seating make this ideal for a picnic without needing rough terrain.

WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre

~£12-£15 adult, concessions available. 15 minutes from Swansea.
