Carers Week: Personal Assistants Help Families Focus on Relationships, Not Responsibilities

Posted on May 26, 2026 in News

Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise the millions of unpaid carers across the UK and the incredible role they play in supporting loved ones. But it's also a chance to ask an important question:

What happens when caring responsibilities start to overshadow the relationship itself?

When Family Becomes Full-Time Support

According to Census data, there are around 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, with many providing dozens of hours of support every week.

For many families, caring starts gradually… A lift to an appointment, help with shopping. Before long, a son becomes a chauffeur, a daughter becomes an organiser, or a spouse becomes a coordinator. The support is given with love, but over time the practical responsibilities can begin to dominate family life.

The Impact on Relationships

When so much time is spent managing appointments, paperwork, transport and day-to-day tasks, it can leave less time for simply being together. Visits become focused on getting things done, conversations revolve around logistics. Time that could be spent enjoying each other's company becomes another item on the to-do list.

Research from Carers Week has found that many unpaid carers experience increased stress and negative impacts on their own health and wellbeing as a result of their caring responsibilities.

How Personal Assistants Can Help

A Personal Assistant can't replace family, nor should they! But they can help to share the load.

Whether it's providing transport, supporting someone to attend activities, helping around the home or assisting with everyday tasks, a PA can take pressure off family members while helping Clients maintain their independence.

This allows family relationships to return to what they were always meant to be: relationships. Instead of spending an afternoon rushing between appointments, families can spend quality time together. Instead of focusing solely on responsibilities, they can focus on making memories.

Better Support for Everyone

Employing a PA isn't just about practical support. It's about creating a healthier balance for everyone involved. The right support can help Clients live more independently while giving family members the space to be sons, daughters, partners and friends first, and carers second.

A Thought for Carers Week

This Carers Week, take a moment to consider:

If some of the practical responsibilities were shared, how might that change your relationships?

For many families, the right support doesn't replace the people they care about… it gives them more opportunity to enjoy being together.
